Types of Saunas
Saunas come in several types, each with different temperature ranges, humidity levels, and traditions.
Traditional Finnish (Dry Sauna)
Temperature
70-90°C (158-194°F)
Humidity
5-30%
Session
10-15 minutes per round
The classic high-heat, low-humidity sauna. Hot air causes profuse sweating and a quick heart rate increase. Often paired with cold plunges or showers between rounds.
Best for:Those who enjoy intense heat and the traditional sauna experience
Hat:Highly recommended - wool felt provides essential head protection
Steam Sauna (Banya/Hammam)
Temperature
40-90°C (104-194°F)
Humidity
60-100%
Session
10-20 minutes
Emphasizes steam and humidity. The high moisture makes the heat feel more intense because sweat can't evaporate well. Russian banyas often use birch whisks.
Best for:Those who prefer moist heat and skin cleansing
Hat:Recommended - protects ears and scalp from steam burns
Infrared Sauna
Temperature
45-60°C (113-140°F)
Humidity
Low (no added steam)
Session
20-30+ minutes
Uses radiant infrared heaters that directly warm your body rather than the air. Gentler heat allows for longer sessions. Popular for muscle therapy and joint pain.
Best for:Those sensitive to high heat, muscle recovery, joint therapy
Hat:Optional - lower temperatures mean less head protection needed
